Four things that decide whether a sail is any good

We measure the rig, not the drawing

Aboard, with the rig tensioned, and where it matters under way. A twenty-year-old boat has been tuned, re-stepped and sometimes shortened, and the sail plan on file is fiction.

Cloth is chosen for the miles

A laminate that is quicker for two seasons and delaminates in the third is a bad buy for someone crossing oceans and a good one for someone racing. We ask which you are before quoting.

Sails and rigging in one shop

A sail that is too full and a forestay that sags are the same problem seen from two trades, and two suppliers will each blame the other. Here it is one conversation.

We photograph the sail flying

Once it is up, from ahead and from below, and compare it to the design shape. Occasionally that means recutting a sail we have just been paid for, which is exactly when it needs doing.
